If
you have any items like left over enamel and lead paints, antifreeze or used
motor oil laying around your basement or garage, the towns of Oyster Bay and
Hempstead have an environmentally safe way to dispose of them.
Stop Throwing Out Pollutants (STOP), accepts
hazardous substances commonly used in and around the home such as: drain and
oven cleaners, chemical solvents, aerosol cans, spot removers, insecticides
and pesticides, automobile batteries and tires.
Keeping these items out of the waste stream helps protect
our groundwater from contamination. Even deep aquifers, where all Long
Islanders get their water, can eventually become polluted.
Residents can dispose of oil and other hazardous
materials on special STOP collection days. For information, call the
Town of Oyster Bay at 677-5748 or the Town of Hempstead at
378-2200 .
Our groundwater supply on Long Island is precious and must be protected for
future generations. |
