Magothy
Aquifer- The
Magothy aquifer is one of three aquifers that lie beneath Long
Island. The aquifers, which are saturated with water, are
composed of layers of sand and gravel. All of the groundwater
on Long Island originates as rainfall and about 44 inches of rain
falls on Long Island each year. About half of that is returned to
the atmosphere through evaporation and absorption by trees and
plants. The remaining 22 inches percolates through the soil
and becomes ground water. Approximately 5.8 million gallons of
water are recharged over the Bethpage area each day as compared to
our average pump withdrawal of 3.3 million gallons per day.
This usage and recharge is typical throughout Long Island.
Groundwater which is not used flows into the aquifer and eventually
discharges into the Atlantic Ocean.
