Frozen pipes can cause a costly mess and consumers need to protect
their water pipes as the temperature dips below freezing. To get your
home ready for winter, take a few moments to drain the outside water spigots
and turn off the flow of water from inside the house. All garden hoses
should be drained, disconnected and stored until spring. Insulate all water pipes that are located in
unheated areas. Hot water pipes also need insulation.
Check garages and crawl spaces as well, because pipes in these spots also
can be
exposed to the elements and are more likely to freeze. All customers should
remember that the heat should never be shut off completely, as this could
cause your pipes to freeze. The heat inside the house should be maintained at a minimum
temperature of 55 degrees.
In-ground lawn sprinkler systems, should be drained in the fall.
Contact the company who services your system to blow
all the water out of the pipes so they do not freeze. Only compressed
air can be used to remove water from the lines.
